General organisation

The second year of the Master in Mathematics comes in two parts: the first part consists of lectures with a written exam. Every student must choose 5 lectures among the lectures in the program, or 4 lectures and a fifth lecture of another, but related, master program  (IMEA, Erasmus Mundus, Omega, Info, etc, your choice must be approved by the coordinator of M2 MPA). The second part consists of the master project which can take place in a research laboratory and lead to a Ph.D., or be an internship in a company using mathematical techniques. It is the responsibility of the student to find a supervisor for the master thesis, but the program coordinator and the academic teachers will guide and support this important choice. At the end the student has to depose a written master thesis and present the content in an oral defense.

In principle the choice of the lectures is free. Nevertheless in order to guarantee a certain coherence of the studies every student must, after the first two weeks of lectures, indicate the exams he or she wants to pass and get the approval of the program coordinator. It is possible to modify these choices later on, but any change must be approved by the coordinator. In order to assure the coherence of the scientific program the lectures are organised in three blocs

It is recommended to choose a bloc at the start of the academic year. Most of the lectures are in English (for the exam you choose French or English), except if all the students understand French.

Provisional calender of the academic year 2017-2018

The lectures are organised in two trimester, each of 10 weeks. Every lecture consists of three hours per week (2 hours of lecture and 1 hour of exercise classes). The timetable is organised in a manner that allows to choose freely among all the lectures.

1st trimester: September - October - November

2nd trimester: December - January - February

Master project: starting in March, defense by mid-June.

Informations for international students

International students can enroll in the Master for Pure and Applied Mathematics either as part of a general exchange program (Erasmus, Alyssa, etc.) or as individual candidates. In both cases it is important that you contact the coordinator of the Master 2 Program to inform him about your plans and send a pdf file containing
  • a Curriculum Vitae and a short letter of motivation
  • copies of your diplomas (translated in French or English)
  • a detailed program of courses followed in 2016-2017
  • letters of recommendation of two professors of your current university
For students coming from a non-EU country it is very often compulsory to apply also at Campusfrance. The coordinator of the Master 2 does not have any influence on the Campusfrance procedure, however it is important to keep him informed about the progress of your application.
